The small village Spenrath
was demolished by 2013
The village was first mentioned in 1398 as “Spenrode”. In the 19th century, a large estate was built on Baumstrasse.
Demolition work in the village began in June 2007. First, the houses in Baumstrasse, the western part of Spenrath, were demolished. At this point the place had already been completely resettled, only the estate Spenrath at the western end was still inhabited. This was also used for agricultural purposes until the summer of 2013. Most of Spenrath's residents have moved to New Spenrath. In mid-2013, the estate was the last building in Spenrath to be demolished. The area has now been completely cleared of opencast mining.
